The Origins of the name Qormi

Many think that the name Qormi comes from the surname Curmi. There were those who said that the name Curmi comes from the word Cherem or Carmi, which means vine. Even the word Qarm means vine. Others argue that Qormi derives from a Greek word which means presence of water, and this may be due to the fact that Qormi is situated in the valleys, or because it is situated below sea level. There are those who argue that the name may originate from the version where there is a reference for vines. In Qormi, vines used to be grown in abundance. Even though there is no documentation on the latter, it is almost certain that the surname Curmi already existed, and therefore the surname hypothesis carries more significance.
